RASCAL FLATTS TV SPECIAL USING CANON 5D MKII

If you can’t beat em’….join em’.

I’ve been a die hard Nikonian from day one. I must admit though I’ve peaked across the fence more than once. When I was awarded the job to produce a TV special & national spot for the upcoming Rascal Flatts new music video for “Here Comes Goodbye” I must admit my first thoughts were RED. It seemed to make sense right? Everybody’s doing it…Then I started looking at logistics, multiple locations, multiple states, etc and the budget started going through the roof! Then it hit me…5Dii! So I started gathering as much info as I possible could and thanks to my friend Dan Rubottom who pointed me in the right direction, I was so impressed with what I saw I decided to make the jump.

So I headed down to my local pro shop and trade the Nikon gear in for Canon. I must admit the 5Dii alone feels like a toy compared to the Nikon D700, so I was a little disappointed at first. It’s a little like learning a new language but I think it’s going to be worth it.

We’re shooting with 2 5D2’s and a Panasonic HVX200 as a backup. I’ll report back once the project is in the can.

Wish me luck!

just remember that thing only shoots 30P. might take some work to get that compatible with broadcast tv.

oh, and then there’s the whole no manual control. When I was using it I kept forgetting to lock my exposure. or I would lock it and do something and it would unlock itself.

ok simmons…you’re making me nervous!

as far as the exposure unlocking…it’s a stupid flaw in this camera, it automatically unlocks itself after 10 mins.

I think you’ll do fine on the shoot … Yes, the camera has got issues, no doubt … But the quality and ease of use can be shocking at times. We shot a video last week with the 5d mk2 and it was great. Our last vid was shot on a Red One, still in beta firmware. Obviously the Red has pro benefits (4k, 120fps, 4:4:4 color) .. but it also means a completely different work flow to handle all the extra data. For the budget conscious production, the 5d mk2 is amazing! Plus, the sensor on the 5d is incredibly sensitive!

Also, I’ve got a DP friend that owns a XDCAM EX1 with a Letus 35mm adapter, and he prefers the look of the 5d footage out of the cam, versus what he gets on his EX1, and he has do a ton of fiddling to get it closer to what the 5d does automatically.

By the way, we used ND filters extensively to keep the lenses wide open … we shot it in the middle of the day! Outside! And it looks amazing!

Our video that I mentioned isn’t released yet on my site, but in a week or so it will be published … Let me know if you want to see some stills and I’ll send it over.

Hey dpense … Just wanted to let you know we released that video I was talking about in my earlier comment … All of it had the ND6 filter attached to the lenses. Super run and gun .. shot in 4 hours .. edited the next day .. graded over the weekend:
